Part 3. Las Histoire Sanctorium
(place)

Quiet hum of neon lights.
Feet shuffle.
Energy is warm, curious.

This is a public participatory event that travels from city to city. An augmented reality (A/R) installation customized to the unique architecture of each library it visits. Performance occurs in the main area of the library, consisting of two visual components described as the altar and gallery. There is a separate designated space for pre/post reception with music, food and additional design surprises which do not disrupt the main procession.

The Altar

A pathway is lit from the library main entrance to the altar which sits on a raised platform. The altar is the stage and is therefore placed as far as possible from the door or in the most central location for dramatic effect. Three steps lead up to a spacious opening. In the center is one clear acrylic, empty bookcase that glows fluorescent yellow.

The Gallery

The gallery indicates to areas left and right of the main walkway. Photos from Noun Part 2. Reread are rendered on flat, translucent screens like digital stained-glass windows, suspended above at different elevations. Edges of the screen are lined with glowing orbs of lights. Fragments of colors streak to the floor. Orbs also hover around different bookcases throughout the space; fairy spotlights on Dewey numbers that coincide with books wrapped on screen. The library basks in color, energized in a way you’d never feel during normal hours. It’s exciting, slightly overwhelming, just like Broadway.

Performance

Guests are welcome to wander the library but must remain off the altar. They may even check out books as during regular hours. Everyone is encouraged to find literature that represents a thing, person or place they wish to let go of. Everyone must wear their A/R glasses and a dark cloak inspired by clergy/Harry Potter attire. 10 figures with their hoods up walk silently amongst the crowd faces hidden, moderating, cleansing the energy. One is Ennis.

(beat)

All A/R lights dim in sync with sunset. We begin. Screens gradient instructions to please gather around the altar with hands in prayer.

(beat)

Ennis slowly walks from the main entrance up the altar. She makes Tai-Chi like gestures around the bookcase for several minutes, preparing. Walk off.

(beat)

One by one, 3 performers walk up the altar. Each repeats the same ritual captioned on screen:

1.
Kneel in front of bookcase

1.
3 slow Ujjayi breaths. Inhale through nose with subtle resistance at the back of the through. Exhale out pursed lips. When you breathe, the room breathes in unison. [this sounds like the ocean]

3.
Wrap book while praying last thoughts to noun.

4.
Place book on shelf with final goodbye. Let go.

5.
One more Ujjayi breath. Everyone please breathe in unison.

(beat)

Guests may raise their hand and volunteer to ascend the altar with their chosen book. The performance ends when everyone who wants to participate has had their turn. Even if the bookcase is full, books may be stacked on top or on the floor surrounding. We do not turn anyone away.

To close, the room raises prayer hands to third eye. A moment of silence then, Namaste.

Post Reception

A lively church style pot-luck concludes the night. Revive! The 10 cloaks can be seen chanting at the altar, unwrapping all books. (closed off but can be observed). They do not make contact guests for the remainder of the evening. Real signs (no A/R in reception area) display a kind message notifying everyone that all fabrics used tonight will be burned. The space will be cleansed of any residual energy before sunrise (library must be open next day). Video of the evening is shown at the opening reception of next performance.
